The sportiest and most powerful series production flat twin Motorcycle of all time, the HP2 Sport Motorcycle continues into model year 2010 with the addition of a special Motorsport Edition.

The HP2 Sport Motorsport Edition continues to be powered by the familiar flat twin engine equipped with double overhead camshafts delivering 133 hp at 8750 rpm, but emulating the look of the BMW Motorrad Motorsport factory racers, featuring fairing, fuel tank, seat bench, front mudguard and engine spoiler painted in the BMW Motorsport colours Alpine White, Lupine Blue metallic and Magma Red.

Outstanding race results are inexorably linked with BMW Motorrad’s flat twin “Boxer” models. So it is an obvious step to build a high-end version! The result is the BMW HP2 Sport: the uncompromising realisation of the 24-Hour Endurance racer as a road machine. 100 per cent motor racing genes, licensed for the road. An exclusive sports machine by BMW Motorrad for motor racing connoisseurs and 2-cylinder enthusiasts which puts racing expertise into serial production – with power and authenticity.

With an incredible air/oil-cooled 133 bhp and 115 Nm – a unique performance for a serial production “Boxer”!

The BMW HP2 Sport Motorcycle caused quite a stir with its race track appearances – rarely has a 2-cylinder flat twin bike caused the competition so much trouble, it even outdistanced many a 4-cylinder bike. In the last 24-hour race at the Oschersleben Speedweek, both machines entered in the race finished in the overall top 10. One reason for this performance is the DOHC cylinder head*, which is being used for the first time in this fascinatingly engineered enthusiast’s motorcycle.

For all ambitious sports riders and keen flat twin fans a unique limited edition of 400 is now to be produced: derived from the paint finish of the Endurance machine, it is finished in the colours Alpine White /Indigo Blue / HP Red. As in the racing machine, the rims are finished in Indigo Blue at the front and Alpine White at the rear. Otherwise all the familiar specifications apply, including the material – leading to a sensational dry weight of 178 kg – and the impressive performance figures. In short: take the opportunity to put it away right now – or else use it for what it was built for and order a second set of rims for the rain tyres along with it!

As an option BMW Motorrad offers ABS especially adapted for sports use. An additional pressure sensor in the front brake circuit permits more sensitive brake regulation and prevents the control unit from releasing the front brake too early when weight is taken off the rear wheel suddenly. The ABS can also be deactivated for racetrack use.

Suzuki GT550 café racer looks the best

The café racer style may not have started on Japanese bikes, but it does help turn some of these into absolutely gorgeous machines. For example, this 1975 Suzuki GT550 (I know, it looks brand new) is probably the coolest café racer approach on a classic Japanese bike.

Thomas Leeming from Montana recently finished building it and he doesn’t forget to mention some of the changes he has done: "pipes by Omar’s. Electronic ignition. Battery, oil tank and electrics are hidden under the seat cowl."

What we like the most about the Suzuki GT550 cafe racer is the racy and yet classy look given by the bike’s stance and the multitude of shiny bits and parts. More pics after the jump.

The Art Deco Motorcycle That Time Forgot

The sheer beauty of the BMW R7 prototype takes my breath away. A single copy was crafted in 1934 by design engineer Alfred Böning. His vision was a departure from the "bicycle with motor" design still prevalent in the 1930s. The R7 incorporated sweeping enclosed bodywork, a pressed steel frame, valanced mudguards and then-innovative telescopic front forks.

The R7's beauty was more than skin deep, however. The transmission featured an 'H' pattern hand shifter and the 800c Boxer engine crafted by Leonhard Ischinger was decades ahead of its time. The revolutionary engine includes a forged, single piece crankshaft. The cylinder housing is a monoblock with a hemispherical combustion chamber, eliminating the need for a troublesome head gasket and the camshaft is positioned below the crank (allowing more convenient plug placement).

Alas, the R7 was deemed too extravagant and expensive to produce in the harsh economic and political climate of the mid-1930s. The roadworthy prototype was stripped of useful parts, crated and largely forgotten until 2005. When the box was finally opened, the R7 was found to be 70% complete but in disastrous condition. Many components were severely rusted and a long-forgotten battery had ruptured and corroded the machine even further.

Luckily, the original design drawings were located in the BMW Archives and BMW Classic undertook a comprehensive restoration. A team of specialists rebuilt the frame, bodywork, transmission and one-of-a-kind motor. By the end of 2008, the machine looked like it must have when Alfred Böning first rolled it out of his Munich workshop. It performed flawlessly on its first road test in over 70 years and, hopefully, will be displayed around the world in years to come.

Million Dollar Motorcycles

Japanese artists are renowned for their Zen-like patience, but spending 7,500 hours hand-crafting a motorcycle would seem to push that to absurd lengths – until you see the motorcycle. Then you wonder how Chicara Nagata managed to build something so stunning in so little time.

Nagata’s award-winning motorcycles are breathtaking works of art, so it is fitting that three of them are featured in an exhibit at New York’s Ippodo Gallery and the Contemporary Asian Art Fair. The bikes are as meticulously crafted as they are stunningly detailed, blending vintage parts with modern design to create motorcycles that are simultaneously retro and futuristic.

Nagata’s art pays tribute to the very machines that almost killed him, and to the people who saved him. "There are many ways a man can express himself, but there are not many things I can do," he writes in the notes accompanying his exhibit. "I have found something on which I will pour my life."

Nagata, 46, was 16 when a motorcycle accident nearly killed him. He endured eight months of intensive therapy and several blood transfusions during his recovery, all the while wondering why he should survive so horrible an accident when so many others haven’t. Nagata, whose name means "power," decided to honor those who had died, and those who saved him, by creating art. He became a graphic designer in 1982 and launched his own studio a decade later.

His love affair with motorcycles was rekindled in 1993 when he started building his first custom. It took him seven years. Whereas most motorcycle "builders" do little more than open the Fat Book parts catalog and start ordering parts they simply bolt together in a week or two, Nagata hand-crafts everything but the drivetrains. The frames, the suspension components, even the throttle assemblies and hand controls are designed and made by Nagata.

He’s built 13 bikes so far. Nagata won the grand prize in the 2006 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building for Chicara Art I, a sleek retro-ride powered by a 1939 Harley-Davidson U motor. He took second place last year with Chicara Art II, which features a 1942 Harley WLA motor.

The three bikes featured at Ippodo can be had for $1 million apiece which, given the level of workmanship, strikes us as a bargain.
